How Trends works.

You can discover what subjects people are following—or aren’t following—virtually instantly with Google Trends. Journalists can utilize this data to investigate possible story ideas. They can also include Trends data into news reports to show the overall interest in a particular topic, such as a political candidate, societal issue, or event.

Topics that Google determines are similar and trending together on Search, Google News, or YouTube are grouped together on the Google Trends homepage (google.com/trends). Google’s Knowledge Graph technology, which compiles search data from those three Google platforms to identify when articles are trending based on the relative jump in volume and the absolute volume of queries, is the basis for collecting Trending articles.

News Lab has selected more data patterns or noteworthy trends to be featured in the Featured insights at the top of the new Google Trends homepage.
